Brown Bear and Western Capercaillie

Brown Bear (Ursus arctos)

  • Length up to 250 cm
  • Weight up to 350 kg
  • Speed up to 50–60 km/h
  • Also found in the Beskydy Mountains; in November 201.. one was spotted near our trail
  • During hibernation, their body temperature drops to 10 °C
  • A bear cub at birth weighs around 0.5 kg
  • The bear appears in the emblem of Bayern Munich, California, and Berlin
  • During World War II, a bear named Wojtek in the Polish army reached the rank of corporal

Western Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus)

  • Male body length up to 90 cm
  • Weight 3 kg
  • They live separately, only gathering in mating sites during the breeding season
  • Mating display consists of four phases:
    • Popping
    • Trill
    • Snapping
    • Grinding
  • During the grinding phase, they become temporarily deaf, hence the name “capercaillie”
  • The nearest population lives at the summit of Kněhyně in the Beskydy Mountains
